Heard a shop owner say they only hire people who can hand write a program now

I was at the supply house in Dayton last week and this guy was talking to the counter guy. He said he won't even look at a resume if the person can't write a simple facing program by hand on paper. It made me stop and think because I've been so used to just using CAM software for everything. I guess he wants people who really get the code, not just the button pushing. Has anyone else's shop started putting more weight on that old school skill?

Gatekeeping" is putting it nicely. That shop owner sounds like the type who makes people sweep the floor with a toothbrush to build character. Next he'll be asking for handwritten G-code on parchment with a quill pen. I get wanting people to understand the basics, but turning it into some weird hazing ritual just means he's gonna miss out on good workers who can actually run machines. The real world needs parts, not poetry.

Sounds a bit over the top to me... most shops just need parts made right and on time. Understanding code is one thing, but making it a hard rule seems like gatekeeping. The real world usually cares more about the final product than how you got there.

Yeah I saw a post about this on a forum last week too. Kinda agree with @ray613, it feels like a weird test when you could just ask them to explain a line of code instead. Like, who even has a printer anymore.
