My chuck key went missing for 3 days and I found it in the last place I expected
Last month at the shop in Gary, Indiana, I ran a whole batch of bushings on the old manual lathe while my chuck key sat in plain sight the entire time. I tore apart my toolbox, my cart, and even the chip bin looking for that thing, all while my coworker Rick watched me sweat through a 10 hour shift. On day three he walks over, points at the key hanging off the tailstock handle, and says he put it there so I would quit losing it. Turns out it was right in front of my face the whole time, about 6 inches from where I was standing. I felt like a total idiot, but Rick got a good laugh and a coffee out of it. Now I keep a spare key in my apron just in case, and yes, I check the tailstock first every single time. What is the dumbest place you have ever found a tool you swore was gone for good?
Lost tools always turn up in spots we walk past a hundred times, which says way more about our brains than our eyes. We get so locked into the panic search that the obvious spot stops being obvious, and that happens with keys, glasses, and wallets too. Rick's prank worked because it used that blind spot against you, and now you check the tailstock first every time, which is really just your brain updating the map.
