My lead hand at the shop in Dayton said to skip roughing passes on 6061 and run it wide open. Bad call.
He told me wide open was fine on a 3/4 endmill in 6061, so I opened up feed to 80 ipm and the cutter snapped in the first ten minutes. That finish pass chatter cost me 45 minutes and a $60 tool. Next time I'm sticking with a proper rough at 40 ipm and letting the finish run slow. What feed and speed combo do you all run on 6061 to keep a 3/4 endmill alive?
80 ipm on a 3/4 in 6061 isn't even that crazy, plenty of guys run way harder than that. Sounds more like the cutter was dull or the setup was flexing than the feed being the problem. Snap in ten minutes usually means something else was off, bad holder, wrong chip load, no coolant. I'd figure out what actually let go before blaming the number he gave you.
