My wife's cousin who runs a fab shop said something about our job that got me thinking.

He was over for dinner and said, 'Honestly, the best operators I've hired are the ones who can read a print like a book and then argue with the engineer about it.' Ngl, that hit different because I've always just followed the print to the letter. How do you guys handle it when you see something on a drawing that just won't work?

Arguing with the engineer IS the job, following the print is just the warm-up.

Remember that time the print called for a part that just didn't fit in the real world? I spent a whole morning going back and forth with the guy who drew it, and we finally found a typo in the measurements. That's the real work right there, fixing the plan so the building doesn't fall down.

Calling out bad prints saves the whole crew from headaches later.
