Ran into a phantom spindle issue on an old VMC last Thursday

I spent like 6 hours chasing a weird vibration on a 2001 Haas VF-2. Turns out it was just a loose setscrew on the drawbar coupler that had backed out maybe a quarter turn. I pulled the whole spindle drive apart before I even thought to check that simple thing. Anyone else get tunnel vision and waste half a shift on something dumb like that?

Loose setscrew on the drawbar coupler" - that's actually called the retention knob or pull stud if we're being picky. The drawbar coupler is the part that holds it inside the spindle. But yeah, I get what you're saying. I did the same thing on a Mori Seiki once, pulled the whole cartridge out over a .001 runout that was just a chip stuck on the taper. Tunnel vision is real when you're tired and the machine's down.

Ran into something similar last month, drove myself crazy for an hour before I realized it was just a tiny burr on the holder. Solidarity on the tunnel vision, man.

I've been right there with you on that tunnel vision thing. Scott.alex is spot on about the chip stuck on the taper, I did the exact same dance on a 2002 Fadal last year. I pulled the whole spindle head off over a .002 runout that turned out to be a dried-up coolant chip wedged between the tool holder and the taper. Now I always hit the taper with a flashlight before I start pulling anything apart, it saves hours. A quick visual check can catch half these phantom issues before they turn into a full strip down.
