Ran my first batch of parts with a feeds and speeds app instead of the old cheat sheet taped to my machine
For 11 years I ran everything off a laminated card my lead hand Gary gave me back in 2013, just eyeballed the numbers and sent it. Bought the app in March and it told me to run the 6061 at 4,200 rpm instead of my usual 3,500, and the finish came out way better with no chatter. Honestly felt a little dumb watching a phone out-cut a card I trusted for a decade. Anyone else made that switch, and did you keep the old numbers around for anything?
That card got you paid for 11 years so dont feel dumb about it, but yeah the phone wins once you feed it good data. The catch is the app only knows what you tell it, so if you lie about your tool holder or your coolant setup it'll spit out numbers that eat inserts. What I do is keep the old card taped up for the oddball stuff, like drill press work or when a job is too small to bother plugging in, and use the app for anything with a real SFM range where the math matters. Gary's numbers were probably conservative on purpose because he couldnt dial in per-tool, so your 4200 makes sense since 6061 likes to be pushed. Run a few more jobs and compare your tool life before you fully trust it, because a better finish doesnt always mean the insert is lasting longer.
