Tried touching off with a feeler gauge instead of paper on a 4140 plate job and cut my setup time way down
Had a batch of 12 plates in 4140 last Thursday and got tired of paper shims getting torn up under the tool, so I grabbed the .002" feeler gauge off my bench instead. Took a couple tries to get the drag right but once I did, every edge finder touch-off was dead on and I shaved almost 20 minutes off setup. The paper was catching a burr on plate 3 and lying to me, the gauge just pushed right through the junk. Anyone else run a gauge over paper, or do you have a better trick for rough stock?
Man, I heard about the feeler gauge trick from an old timer at a shop I used to run parts at. He swore by it for anything with scale or rough saw marks on it, said paper just folds over and gives you a false reading. Only thing he warned me about was pressing too hard and springing the gauge, so he'd always check with a light drag and never force it. I still keep a .001 and .002 in my box for that exact reason. Sounds like you got the feel down and 20 minutes on a 12 piece run adds up fast.
