Watched a guy in the Cincinnati shop lose a finger to a chip brush

It was a Tuesday morning, about 8 months ago. He was cleaning chips off a running Haas VF2 with a long-handled brush, just like we all do. The bristle caught in the chuck, yanked his hand in, and that was it. The sound was awful. Now I never touch a machine, not even for a quick wipe, unless it's fully stopped and locked out. How do you guys handle chip cleanup on busy production runs?

Two of you saw it happen. That's not a weird coincidence, that's a pattern. My old foreman used to say "safety third" as a joke. Guess some guys took it as a challenge.

Saw the same thing happen at my old shop.

Did you guys ever try just putting a dedicated spot for the grinder with a loop of paracord? We had the same issue at our last place, guys kept dropping them off ledges and ladders. I took an old carabiner and some 550 cord, tied a simple little leash to the grinder handle and clipped it to their belt loop. Took all of 5 minutes and nobody dropped one again. Even the stubborn old timers started using it after they saw it worked.
