An old guy at a diner in Portland taught me to smell the grounds before I buy, and I still do it 8 years later
I was sitting at a counter spot in Portland back in 2016 and this older guy next to me saw me sniffing a bag of beans like an idiot, trying to guess if they were fresh. He leaned over and said the smell test only works after you grind, because whole beans hide everything, then he had the server bring out a little cup of grounds so I could compare. I grind a pinch at the shop now before I pay for anything, and I've dodged maybe 5 bags of stale beans that way. Does anyone else do this, or do you just trust the roast date on the bag?
