My French press exploded coffee grounds all over my new couch

I was trying to make a strong cup in my living room yesterday morning, using my usual coarse grind from a local roaster. When I pushed the plunger down, it hit a hard stop and the whole top popped off, sending wet grounds flying across the room. They landed all over my light gray sofa, and I spent the next hour trying to clean it with a damp cloth and a vacuum. Has anyone else had a press fail this badly, and what's the best way to get coffee stains out of fabric?

My old roommate swore by a French press for years, so I always thought they were foolproof. Then I watched his do the exact same thing, a geyser of grounds all over our white kitchen wall. That mess changed my mind fast. For your couch, try a mix of dish soap and cold water first, blotting it up. If that doesn't work, a little white vinegar spray can help with the stain without hurting the fabric. Honestly, that experience is why I switched to a pour over setup.

French press disasters are a rite of passage... my last one shot a spray of coffee sludge right across my favorite cookbook. Ruined the pages. For fabric, the dish soap trick works, but you gotta use cold water and press from the outside in. A tiny bit of baking soda paste on the stain for an hour before you blot can lift the last of the color out too.

Fiona749, a geyser on a white wall sounds way worse than a couch stain.
