That roaster in Portland told me to quit weighing my beans and I fought him on it
I was at a small cupping event in Portland about 8 months ago and got into it with the guy running the table. He said my 18 gram dose and 1:16 ratio was making me lazy, and that I should learn to eyeball and taste instead. I told him he was nuts, but he poured three cups with doses all over the place and I honestly could not pick out the sloppy one. So I went home and ran the same test 6 times over two weeks, and my 15.5 gram scoop tasted the same as my weighed 18. It bugs me because I like the routine, but I have to admit the scale was covering for me not paying attention to the cup. Now I only pull it out when a bag tastes off and I need to change one thing. Anyone else find that gear was hiding a weak palate, or is this guy just lucky?
