Why does the coffee at my hospital cafeteria taste like burnt tires no matter what I order?
I grabbed a cup at the cafeteria in Mercy General on 5th during my shift break and the drip coffee tasted like someone ran hot water through an old ashtray. I watched the guy behind the counter dump a fresh scoop into a machine that had visible crust on the carafe, so I asked if they ever clean it and he just shrugged. Is there a way to tell if a place is using old beans or a dirty machine before you waste $3?

That visible crust on the carafe is basically the only warning label you're gonna get, because nobody's posting a health score for coffee equipment. Next time just sniff the air near the machine, if it smells like a wet campfire, order tea.
