Appreciation post: Letting go of my comic book timeline hang-up

I always got mad at friends who jumped into comics without knowing the full backstory. Now I see they're just having a good time, and I joined in on random issues. Do you think we focus too much on getting the history right?

My old approach was basically doing homework before fun. I'd spend more time on wikis reading about Batman's lost years than actually reading a Batman comic.

Dealt with that same hang-up myself. Always needed to start at issue one. It took the fun out of it. Watching others just enjoy the story helped me relax. Getting every detail right isn't the point. Having a good time is what matters.

Totally get that, I was the same with X-Men. Had to know every single team line-up back to the 60s before I felt "allowed" to read a modern book. It's exactly what @taylor_butler said, just homework. Finally just grabbed a random issue with cool art and had a blast.

Yeah, joining random issues is how I got into Spider-Man too.
