I finally gave that new 'Marvel Voices' series a shot after ignoring it for months, and the story about the deaf hero in issue #3 completely changed my mind.
I was sure it was just a marketing thing, but the way they handled the signing and the art to show sound (or the lack of it) was so well done it made me go back and read the whole run, so has anyone else been genuinely surprised by a book they initially wrote off?

The art in that issue felt pretty gimmicky to me.

Yeah, the "gimmicky" thing reminds me of my buddy who bought that issue just for the art. He said it looked cool online but felt cheap in person. What did you think of the colors, @kevin_williams?

Did the colors look washed out in person too?

Kevin saying the art felt "gimmicky" is exactly the kind of take that made me almost skip this series. I get it, on the surface it looks like a stunt. But that issue with the deaf hero totally changed my mind too. They showed sound as visual ripples and vibrations in a way I've never seen before, it wasn't just fancy drawings. It actually helped me understand what a deaf person experiences. Calling that gimmicky is like calling a wheelchair a fashion accessory.
