My comic shop guy in Dayton told me to skip the $75 slab and just read the floppy first, and he was dead right
I walked into my local shop on a Saturday with $75 set aside for a graded copy of a book I had never actually read, just saw it hyped all over YouTube. The owner, Ray, who has run that place for 19 years, said flat out: "Read the story before you buy the plastic." So I grabbed the $4 reader copy off the wall instead. Turned out I hated the writing and the slab would have sat in a box forever. Now I want to know, do you guys buy slabs for the story or just for the shelf flex?
Ray sounds like the kind of guy who saves people hundreds without even trying. I did the same thing last year with a $90 slab of a #1 that every channel swore was a classic, grabbed the $3 copy first, and the story was a total slog by issue 3. What really gets me is when people slab a book they have never read once, then call it a key. A slab tells you the grade, not whether the story is any good, and those are two totally different things. My rule now is read it cheap, and only chase the slab if I actually want to reread it.
