PSA: dropped $120 on that graded comic prescreen service and got nothing back but a 'no'
Sent six books to a grading prescreen at a shop in Columbus back in March, paid $20 a book, $120 total. They promised an honest look before I paid full grading fees. Two of those books were a Hulk 181 reprint and a Ms. Marvel 1 I was sure would at least pull a 9.0. Got the email three weeks later: all six came back 'not recommended,' no notes, no reasons. So I am out $120 and still have no clue what killed them. But I showed the same six to a buddy at my local shop in Dayton and he spotted a spine tick and a tiny color break I had missed completely. He graded them for free over a coffee. Lesson is the prescreen middleman just wants your fee and your hope. Has anyone actually gotten useful notes back from one of these, or is it just me getting played?
The "prescreen middleman just wants your fee and your hope" line hits home. I did a similar thing with coins years back, sent a Morgan dollar to one of those mail-in outfits that swore they would tell me if it was worth real grading. Paid $30, got back a form letter saying it was cleaned, which it wasn't, and a glossy brochure for their next service. My coin guy took one look under his loupe and said the toning was natural, the letter was garbage. Never did figure out if they even opened the flip.
