Shoutout to the guy at my LCS who pulled me aside to warn me a key issue was overpriced
He stopped me at the register last Saturday and pointed out the same book was $15 cheaper at another shop across town, so I saved $20 and now I always ask his opinion before buying.

The 30-year old long boxes full of $1 books down the street are where I built half my collection. Look, I get being grateful for the honesty, but that owner might be shooting himself in the foot. If enough people take his advice and buy the cheap book elsewhere, he loses repeat business. I've seen shops close because they were too nice and couldn't move their higher-priced stock. A $20 savings is great for you, but that store just lost a sale and now you're training yourself to check somewhere else every time. Before long, you'll just go straight to the other shop and he'll have trained a loyal customer away from his own register.

That shop owner is a real one for doing that. Most places would just take your money and move on. How often do you actually go back to that other shop now that you know they're charging less?
