Showerthought: This guy at the Chicago con last year told me I wasn't a 'real' fan because I only read the trades...

He saw me buying a collected edition of 'Saga' and said, 'You're missing the whole experience of waiting month to month,' which just felt so weirdly gatekeepy for someone in a Batman onesie.

Ugh, that Batman onesie guy is the worst. I heard a podcast where a writer said they actually PREFER when people read the trades, because that's how the story arc is meant to be read all at once. The single issues are just how they have to ship it out. Calling someone not a real fan for liking a complete story is just sad.

My local shop owner told me 40% of his sales are trades now. The whole single issue thing is just a different way to read, not a better one. That Batman guy needs to get over himself.

Guess we found the one guy who took the Wednesday ritual way too seriously. If the actual writers prefer people reading the finished book, that should end the whole argument. The guy in the Batman pajamas is fighting a war the industry already lost. Just let people enjoy the stories however they want.
