Vent: my local comic shop owner called me a 'collector' and it stung

Last Saturday I stopped by Big Brain Comics in Minneapolis to grab the new issue of something I've been following for a while. The owner, who I've known for about 3 years now, saw me holding three variant covers and said, "Oh, you're one of those collectors now, huh?" Man, that hit weird. I don't flip books or chase graded slabs, I just like reading them and having a shelf full of stories. But it made me wonder if there's a line between being a reader and being a collector that I crossed without noticing. Has anyone else gotten that label thrown at them and felt like they had to defend why they buy comics?

The label probably stung because there's some truth to it. You grabbed three variant covers of one book, that's not just reading, that's shopping for extras to own. Nothing wrong with being a collector, it's just a different hobby than being a reader.
