Went to a convention in Indianapolis and saw something that bugged me all weekend

I drove down to Indy Comic Con last Saturday, and there was this guy walking around with a long box full of key issues just stacked loose, no bags or boards. He kept pulling out copies of Amazing Spider-Man 300 and handing them to people to flip through with greasy pizza fingers. I asked him why he wasn't protecting them and he said 'they're just comics, man.' Has anyone else run into collectors who treat valuable books like newspapers?
