Hit 1,000 commercial dives last Thursday and honestly the number means less than I thought it would
Everyone talks about dive counts like they prove something, but my best work came from the easy shallow jobs not the deep record-breaking ones. Has anyone else noticed that the pressure to hit big numbers makes you overlook the basics?

Dive counts are like resumes... they look good on paper but don't tell you anything about how you actually handle the work." That number sounds impressive but I've seen guys with 50 dives who could teach a masterclass on the basics, and guys with 2,000 who panic when their mask floods. The real flex is the guy who checks his gear twice every time, not the guy who can recite his logbook stats. Counting dives is just measuring time, not skill, it's like saying I've been driving for 20 years but still can't parallel park.

So what do you actually look for when you're picking a dive buddy then? Cause I'm betting it's not the guy who walks up and hands you his logbook with a smug grin. The quiet ones who just get on with it and don't feel the need to prove anything are usually the ones I'd trust in a pinch.

Is it just me or does hitting a milestone actually mess with your head a little? Makes you start second guessing easy dives cause they don't feel "important" enough. @victorhernandez nailed it though, the guys who triple check their gear are the real pros.
