Hot take: the 20 minute rule for bottom time is mostly ego
I was reading through an old dive report from a job in Morgan City back in 2019 and one line stuck with me. A supervisor wrote that 8 out of 12 divers on his crew were pushing past their no-deco limits just to look good in front of the new guys. That number felt way too high until I thought about my own dives. I've caught myself staying down an extra 5 or 10 minutes on a simple inspection just because the tender was watching. The gas planning was fine, the job was done, and I still hung around. Now I log every dive with a note about whether the extra time was actually needed. Curious if anyone else tracks that or if I'm just overthinking it.
