Lost my comms on a 40 ft pipe job in Galveston Bay and had to use hand signals I barely remembered
Was doing a pipe inspection off a small barge in Galveston Bay last Tuesday, about 40 ft down, when my tender's voice just cut out mid check. Nothing but static. Turns out the comms cable got nicked at the surface where it was rubbing on the barge edge, nobody had checked the tie off point that morning.
So I'm sitting there with a dead line and maybe 20 minutes of air left on my planned bottom time. I had to fall back on hand signals, and honestly I was rusty. The tender and I stood there squinting at each other through the murk trying to remember if a flat hand meant hold or stop. We got it sorted, I came up safe, but it shook me a bit.
Now I make sure the cable gets a proper wrap and a check before I ever go in. What hand signal set do you all run with your tenders? I want to know what actually works when the comms die on you.
