My Kirby Morgan band mask seal split during a 60 foot weld repair Saturday
Was 20 minutes into a 2 hour weld repair on a piling down in Port Arthur when I felt that dreaded cold trickle down my neck. Anyone else had a seal blow mid-job and had to bag off early?

Warm soapy water and a good inspection before the dive is the only thing that saved me from the same situation on a bridge job last year. Found a tiny split near the nose piece that I would have missed otherwise and swapped it out right there on the deck. Always keep a spare seal in your gear bag, those things are cheap compared to bagging off a paying job.

That pre-dive check routine really is the difference between a good day and a bad one underwater.

Notice this same pattern shows up everywhere once you start looking for it. The people who spend two extra minutes checking their gear before a job are usually the ones who never have mid-dive disasters, same way the folks who test their harness connections before climbing never get that sudden freefall feeling. It is basically the universe's way of rewarding boring, methodical behavior before things get exciting.
