Old hand at the Galveston yard said to check my umbilical before every splash, and it saved me a mess last Tuesday
When I first started working the Gulf out of Galveston, a diver with about 25 years under his belt pulled me aside and said to walk my umbilical end to end before every single splash, no shortcuts. I figured it was just old timer fussing since the gear looked fine, so I got lazy about it for a few jobs. Last Tuesday on a pipeline inspection in 40 feet of water, I finally did the full walk and spotted a gouge about 6 inches from the fitting that I would have missed completely. The tender and I taped it and swapped the section before I went down, and the dive went clean. Anybody else got a pre-dive check the young guys always want to skip?
