Overheard a salvage diver say 'current is a liar' and it made me rethink my whole pre-dive routine

He was talking about how the water can look calm at the surface but have a nasty rip 15 feet down, and now I'm double-checking tide charts before every job. Anyone else ever get caught off guard by subsurface current that the surface didn't hint at?

Actually, currents can flip direction at different depths. It's not always just a single change - sometimes it'll switch back and forth depending on the tide stage and bottom shape. That dive dude was spot on about surface being a total liar though.

16 years in pest control and I've seen the same thing with wasp nests under eaves - what looks quiet on top is a total different story underneath. Surface tells you nothing, you gotta dig a little to see what's really moving.

Wait, how deep down did he say the current changes direction?
