Rant: My old man's dive log from 1988 vs mine from last week, and the gap is wild
I was cleaning out my dad's garage in Gulfport and found his old dive log from when he worked the rigs back in 1988, and every single entry is just a scribbled depth, a time, and the word "good" or "rough." My log from last Tuesday has 14 fields, a surface interval graph, and a note about my boots chafing at 60 feet. Made me wonder if we traded all that extra detail for anything that actually keeps us safer down there.
A surface interval graph? For a Tuesday fun dive? That is wild to me. I keep a log too but mine is a $6 notebook from the bait shop with depth, time, and a note like "viz bad" or "saw a turtle." Fourteen fields and boot chafe notes sounds like you're writing a report for a boss who doesn't exist. Your dad's "good" or "rough" told him everything he needed to know about whether to go back down tomorrow.
