Snapped my umbilical on a pipeline job in Morgan City and learned to check the strain relief
Two weeks back I was working a shallow water pipeline inspection off Morgan City and my umbilical snagged on a weld seam around 40 feet. The strain relief was worn thin and the cable jacket tore open, cutting comms and my pneumo line at the same time. I stayed calm, switched to my backup light and surface marker, and did a slow free ascent on my own air supply. Got topside with about 800 psi left and a torn up 200 foot cable that costs $2,300 to replace. Now I run a hand down the full length of my umbilical during pre-dive and check the strain relief with a flashlight every single time. Any of you got a good trick for spotting jacket wear early before it turns into a real problem?
