That $400 underwater camera housing I bought off Craigslist was a total bust

Saw a deal on a used housing for a Sony a7 series, guy said it was pressure tested to 100 meters. Paid $400 cash, looked fine on the outside. Took it down to 60 feet on a pipeline inspection job near Port Fourchon and it flooded after 10 minutes. Found out later the o-ring groove had a hairline crack you couldn't see until you pried the seal out. Camera was a total loss too. Anyone else get burned by buying used gear from strangers instead of just saving for new?

Total loss" is exactly what happened to me with a used drysuit once. Guy swore it was "barely used" and I ended up looking like a popsicle after my first dive.

The "barely used" lie is everywhere now. Same guy probably says his car is "garage kept" when it sat outside for years.

wait wait wait - they told you it was pressure tested to 100 meters and it flooded at 60 feet? and the o-ring groove had a crack you could only see after prying the seal out? that's the kind of stuff nightmares are made of man. i had a buddy who bought a used housing for his canon and the seller swore it was "freshly serviced" but turned out they just put a new coat of silicone on an old crusty oring and called it a day. luckily he tested it in a sink first before taking it anywhere deep.
