The foreman at the Port of Long Beach made me redo my bailout drill twice, and I finally get why
Was doing a 60 foot inspection dive on a pier pilings job in Long Beach and my hose got fouled on some old cable at the 40 foot mark. I stayed calm and worked through it, but the foreman still made me run the full bailout drill twice on deck after. He said "I don't care how smooth you looked down there, I care that your hands know what to do when your brain is panicking." Anyone else have a close call that made them change how they prep before a dive?
Isn't that exactly why they drill it into you until your arms ache? Your brain goes offline underwater, so the only thing that saves you is pure muscle memory. I started running my bailout drills with my eyes closed and thick gloves on after a regulator free-flow at 70 feet, and it was humbling how much I fumbled the first few times. Now I do one dry run in the truck before every splash.
