A customer asked why I charge a bench fee, and my answer made him go quiet
Guy brings in a laptop on Tuesday, says it just needs a quick look. I tell him it's $60 up front to even open it, and he gets a little hot about it, says the last shop looked at it for free. I told him the free look is why he's here now, because nobody wrote down what they actually did. Turns out somebody had swapped his RAM around and left a screw rolling loose inside the case. So now I'm wondering, do you all charge the bench fee and stick to it, or do you wave it for easy stuff to keep people coming back?
Did the guy ever come back after you showed him the loose screw? I had a buddy who used to do free checks at his shop until one lady swore he broke her screen, even though it was already cracked when she dropped it off. He started charging $40 just to look after that and his return customers actually went up because people figured he must be good if he wasn't begging for work.
