A kid at the repair bench next to me said SSDs don't need backups, and I had to walk away
Last Tuesday I was at a shop in Columbus helping a guy recover photos off a dead laptop, and the new hire two benches over said out loud that SSDs never fail so he skips backup talks with customers. I pulled a dead Samsung 970 out of my drawer, the one that quit at 14 months with a controller fault, and set it next to his coffee. He went quiet for a minute, then admitted he had never seen one fail yet. How do you all explain drive failure to new techs without sounding like you are just being a grump about it?
Talk to them about how SSDs fail in ways spinning drives don't, like controller chips dying or firmware bugs bricking the whole thing with zero warning. Drives are just chips and circuits, and every one of them has a limited number of writes before cells start wearing out, so "never fails" is not a thing that exists. Show them a dead one instead of lecturing, because a real dead drive on the bench teaches faster than any speech.
