Pulled apart a dead HP laptop today and found the SSD was made by a company I've never heard of before

That "HP" SSD is usually just a relabeled drive from a bigger brand like Samsung or Toshiba. They don't make their own memory chips, they just slap their logo on it.

See it different - HP actually does solid quality checks on those rebranded drives.

Those "quality checks" probably just mean they make sure the HP logo is on straight before shipping it out. Does it really matter that much for a basic SATA drive?
