Serious question, how did you handle a bad stick of RAM before memtest86?
Back in 2011 I had a customer's PC in my little garage setup in Tacoma that kept blue screening every 20 minutes, and I swapped parts by hand for 3 hours guessing at it. Now I just boot memtest86 off a USB stick and it points right at the bad stick in under 15 minutes. I lost a whole afternoon back then because I trusted the sticker on the box instead of actually testing. Part of me misses the puzzle, but I do not miss pulling good sticks for nothing. What was your go to trick before we had free memory testers?
My go to was swapping sticks one at a time and rebooting like 40 times while my dinner got cold, real scientific stuff. Half the time I'd pull the wrong one and put the good stick back in the bad slot. Took me way too long to figure out that reseating usually fixed it anyway.
