Switched from thermal paste to thermal pads on my last three builds

I used to always go with Arctic Silver thermal paste for every CPU install, but after my 5th build in a row where the pump bracket smeared paste all over the socket edge, I grabbed a pack of Thermalright thermal pads for $8. Just cut them to size, peel and stick, no mess and the temps dropped by 2 degrees compared to my usual paste job. Made me wonder if I've been overcomplicating things for years with the whole pea drop method. Any other techs here made the swap and noticed a difference?

Honestly, you probably just got lucky, thermal pads are way less effective than paste on most CPUs.

Hold up though, are we really acting like this is some huge deal? I've swapped out thermal paste for pads on a few old builds and honestly the temps were within like 2-3 degrees either way. People act like you need to hit this perfect application or your CPU will melt into a puddle or something. Sure maybe on a high end overclocked chip the difference adds up but for an average user just gaming or doing normal stuff it's barely noticeable. It's just paste or a pad, not a CPU lottery.

Hang on Fiona, are you really saying thermal pads are worse across the board? I've seen tests where certain thick pads actually beat paste on direct die chips, especially after a few months when pump out kicks in. @park.aaron's point about normal usage is fair, but the whole "lucky" thing seems dismissive when some pads are engineered specifically for CPUs now. What kind of tests are you basing that on, like specific hardware or just general knowledge?
