Ten years fixing PCs and I just learned I was seating RAM sticks backwards
Tbh I've been building and repairing computers since 2014 and it took a random Reddit thread last Tuesday to realize I've been pushing RAM in at the wrong angle the entire time. I always thought you had to rock it in from the top, but apparently you line it up straight and push firmly on both ends until the clips click. I checked my last three builds and all of them had the sticks slightly crooked. None of them ever failed or threw errors, which honestly blows my mind. Has anyone else discovered they've been doing something basic wrong for way longer than they want to admit?

You're making it sound like a bigger deal than it is. If the machines booted, ran stable, and never threw errors for years, then clearly it worked fine even if it wasn't textbook. I've seen people drop a stick in crooked and the PC still posts, no issues. The clips aren't exactly precision tools either, half of them are cheap plastic that barely hold. So long as you're not snapping the board or shorting pins, who cares. A crooked RAM stick that functions is still a functioning RAM stick.

Nah, I gotta side with noahwood on this one. That whole "it works now so it's fine" attitude is how people end up with mysterious crashes a year later and can't figure out why. I've seen it plenty behind the bar where someone's janky setup finally gives out at the worst possible time. Heat cycles and vibration are real, they loosen stuff up slowly. Why take the gamble when reseating it right takes like two minutes? Just do it right the first time and save yourself the headache later.

I had a buddy who built a Ryzen 1600 system back in 2017 with a crooked stick of G.Skill RAM. It booted fine, ran for two years, then suddenly started throwing WHEA errors out of nowhere. We reseated everything and it was fine after that, but those two years of "fine" were actually just waiting for a problem. The contacts inside the slot are thin metal leaves, and if the stick is tilted even a little, some of those leaves might not be making full contact. Over time heat cycling and vibrations can gradually loosen that connection. It might boot and run stable for a while, but you're basically gambling that the marginal connection stays perfect forever.
