Changed my float technique after watching a guy in Fresno finish a 40x60 slab
I was getting these little ridges behind my bull float on every pour and it was driving me nuts. Last month I watched a finisher in Fresno work a 40x60 slab and he kept the float at a slight angle and pulled toward himself on the return pass instead of pushing away. Tried it on a driveway job in Clovis two days later and the ridges were gone before I even hit it with the trowel. He said most guys overwork the mud trying to fix it after the fact when the angle does the work for you. Any of you mess with your float angle depending on the mix, or do you keep it the same every pour?

My buddy ran into the same thing on a patio pour last summer and he was fighting ridges for weeks. An old finisher told him the mix matters more than people want to admit, wetter mud needs a flatter angle or you just push the cream around instead of sealing it. He started tilting his float a touch different depending on how the truck showed up that day and said it made way more of a difference than changing his whole pass pattern. Funny how the little stuff nobody talks about ends up being the whole deal.
