Heard a guy at the supply house in Phoenix say you should always use a magnesium float for everything, but I think that's a good way to burn the surface on a hot day.
I've seen too many guys pull up a crusty top layer because they stuck with the mag when a wood float or even a foam one would have given them more control and time to work, especially with that 95 degree mix we got last Thursday.

Nah, wood floats leave a finish that's way too open for my taste. I stick with a plastic float for the final pass to get it nice and tight.

Yeah, and a wood float is way better for that final pass to close up any marks.

Wait, you use wood for the final pass? I always thought that would leave too much texture. Are you talking about a specific kind of wood float, like a magnesium one? I've only used plastic for finishing.
