Heard a guy at the supply yard say he never uses a magnesium float anymore

I was picking up some fiber mesh in Tacoma yesterday and this older finisher was talking to the counter guy. He flat out said, 'I haven't touched a mag in ten years, only use a wood float now.' It made me stop and think because I've always used both depending on the bleed water. I'm curious if this is a common thing or just his personal trick. Has anyone else switched to just wood for everything?
