Hot take: the slump number on the bag surprised me more than the finish did
I was reading the back of a bag of Quikrete 5000 at the yard in Amarillo last Tuesday and saw that the slump range printed right on it is 2 to 5 inches. Never paid it any mind before, I just mix to what feels right like most of us do. But I grabbed a slump cone and checked my last two driveway pours and both came in around 6 and a half. That extra inch and a half is why my broom finish started dragging on me and why I got those little tear outs by the garage apron. Anybody else actually stick the cone or am I the only one who's been eyeballing it for 14 years?
Reminds me of when I helped my uncle pour a shed slab back in like 2016 and he had this old wooden slump cone his dad made. Dude mixed everything by eye for 30 years and swore by it, then one day his grandson checked a batch for a school project and it came out at like 7 inches. Uncle blamed the sand, the weather, the water, everything except his own eyeballs. The tear outs you're talking about make total sense too, wet mix wants to move on you when you're pulling a broom across it. Makes me wonder how many driveways out here are sitting at 6 plus and nobody knows.
