Rant: my dad told me to finish that driveway in 3 passes, and the broom drag was a mess
My old man has been pouring for 30 years and told me to just work the 20x30 slab in 3 passes with the float and not stop. I did it his way in the heat last Saturday, around 88 degrees, and by the time I got back to the first pass it was already going off on me. Ended up with a ridge line about 4 feet from the garage apron and had to hit it with a second float while the truck was still sitting there. We saved the pour but the owner ran his hand across it and you could feel the hump. Anyone else get burned following advice from a guy who learned on bigger crews with more help?

Something that helped me on hot days was setting up two floats so I could keep one ahead of the other and not lose time walking back. I also started cutting my passes narrower, more like 8 feet instead of trying to span the whole slab, which kept the edge from drying before I got back around. A little water mist on the surface right before the float pass buys you a few extra minutes too, just don't overdo it or you'll get a slick spot. Watching the sheen instead of the clock saved me more than any advice anyone gave me. When it's 88 out and the mix is hot, nobody can outrun it in 3 big passes no matter how long they've been pouring.
