Stop troweling wet edges twice, just turn them once
I kept seeing guys on my crew in Austin burning edges twice because the first pass left those ugly low spots next to forms. Maybe it's just me, but I noticed if you hit the edge with a trowel while the mud is still glistening, then walk away for 20 minutes and come back for a single firm pass, it lays down way flatter. Double troweling while it's soft just pulls cream up and makes the edge sit higher than the middle, so you end up grinding later or patching. Last week on a 40 yard driveway pour, I tried the one pass method on the sidewalk strip and the rest of the crew did their usual thing. The next morning you could see my section had no birdbaths and theirs had three spots needing filler. Has anyone else switched to single pass edges or do you have a trick for timing that final trowel?
