That talk with my dad about his old 1950s bull float made me realize how much we traded feel for speed.
He said 'you kids never learned to read the concrete' and I couldn't argue because I've been using power floats and mix additives for 15 years now, so has anyone else gotten that kind of reality check from an older hand?

Yeah my old man handed me a worn out wooden bull float and told me the same thing. Took me a whole year of screwing up before I finally slowed down enough to feel the concrete talk back through the handle.

Must be nice @knight.uma, I just got handed a shovel and a dirty look.

@knight.uma hit the nail on the head. A buddy of mine borrowed his grandpa's old bull float for a patio job and spent the whole first day fighting the concrete. He called me that night saying he couldn't figure why it felt so wrong.
