Picked the $40 spy pen over the $200 recorder for a meetup, got way more than I bargained for
I had to choose between getting a hidden camera pen or just using my phone for recording a local town hall meetup last Tuesday. I went with the cheap spy pen from some random electronics shop on 5th Avenue because my phone battery kept dying. Ngl, the audio came out muffled but I caught someone in the back talking about a zoning plan that was supposed to be 'not on the agenda.' Has anyone else tried budget gear for amateur investigating and ended up with a lead?

Wait, hold up. Someone in the back was whispering about a zoning plan that was "not on the agenda" and you got it on a $40 pen? That's the kind of thing that makes me wonder if they knew people were listening or if they were just that sloppy. What did the muffled audio actually catch, like full sentences or just bits and pieces you had to piece together? And was this person somebody you recognized, or a total stranger? Because if it's a name you know, that zoning thing might be worth showing up to the next meeting for.
