TIL the streetlight outages on my block have sparked a wild theory about data collection.
People on my street are saying the frequent streetlight failures are a cover for installing surveillance gear. I work in IT, so I know it's probably just old wiring or a maintenance issue. It's annoying how quick everyone is to assume some secret plot. I tried explaining, but they just nod and keep talking about 'patterns'. Now every time a light goes out, I hear new rumors.

That sounds incredibly frustrating to deal with! Some people just don't want to hear the simple truth.

Just state the facts calmly.

Why do people always assume spying instead of simple fixes? Most cities have old wiring that fails all the time. I've heard similar rumors in my neighborhood, and it turned out to be a squirrel chewing through cables. Just sharing what I've seen.

That squirrel story is a good example, but sometimes the rumors start because weird stuff keeps happening. Old wiring fails, sure, but when it's the same spot over and over, people notice. It's not always spying, but it might be more than just a simple fix.
