Watched a neighbor get mail from a dead man for 8 months and now I don't know what to think
Last June I moved into a house on the east side of Bakersfield and the guy next door, Ray, told me the previous owner of my place died in 2019. Around August I started getting envelopes addressed to that dead man. Not junk, real stuff, bank statements, a renewal notice from the DMV, even a jury summons in January. Ray saw me holding one and said he gets mail for the guy too, has for 8 months, and he just marks it return to sender. Here's the part that gets me. I called the bank once, and the woman on the phone got real quiet and transferred me, then the line cut. I know it's probably just slow databases and nobody updating records, that happens all the time. But 8 months of it, plus a summons for a dead man, makes you wonder how many other records are just sitting there wrong. Has anyone else dealt with a place that kept getting mail for someone who passed years back, and did you ever figure out why it would not stop?
Man, that stuff can take on a life of its own. My grandma passed in 2017 and the cemetery kept sending her a bill for the plot every year like clockwork, and when my mom called to tell them she was gone they said they needed it in writing. Sent the death certificate twice before it stopped. So yeah, it's probably just lazy records, but the phone going quiet on you is weird.
