18 years in and I just realized I was reading tape measures wrong

I've been doing trim work since 2006, and it hit me last Tuesday on a job in Spokane. I always measured from the 1-inch mark and subtracted, thought that was the pro way. Turns out I was adding a 1/16 offset every single cut because my cheap tape's hook was bent out a hair. My finish guy caught it when he re-checked three baseboards and they were all short by the same tiny amount. Fixed the hook with pliers and now I just use the end of the tape like normal. Anyone else discover a basic habit you'd been messing up for years, and how did you figure it out?

...that hook thing is brutal, honestly. I did the exact same on a kitchen remodel back in 2011. Measured all the uppers off the 1" line for years, then my helper pointed out the hook was a little loose and everything was off by just under a 16th. Pliers fixed it in two seconds, but I still catch myself doing the subtract thing out of habit. It's wild how one tiny bend can mess with your whole day.
