Spent 4 hours trying to match paint from a chip the size of a dime

The homeowner handed me a paint chip smaller than my thumbnail and I figured I'd have it matched in 20 minutes, but three trips to Sherwin-Williams later I still had to take a chunk of drywall to the store to get it right, has anyone else dealt with a color match that turned into a whole day project?

That "cosmic joke" thing you mentioned - I actually think the problem is usually the opposite. Most homeowners grab a chip from some random spot that's already been faded or dirty, then expect a perfect match to brand new paint. The computer is probably getting a bad sample to work with. I've matched dozens of colors from chips smaller than a dime and they came out fine because I took the chip from an area that wasn't sun damaged or covered in grime. Maybe the universe isn't messing with you, maybe the paint chip was just junk to begin with.

Man, cutting a bigger chunk first time saves so much headache.

Oh man that is the WORST lmao. It's like the universe has this hidden rule where the smaller the paint chip, the more cursed the color match will be. I swear it's a cosmic joke because I've literally spent a whole afternoon driving back and forth for a chip the size of a pea. It's like those little pieces of paint hold a secret formula that no computer can ever figure out, so you end up staring at swatches under three different lights like you're solving a crime. The worst part is when you finally think you've got it, you paint a test area and it's just... wrong. It's almost like the paint gods are testing your patience lol.
