The cheap laser level that cost me $200 in wasted tile

Picked up a $40 laser level from a big box store last month for a backsplash job in Cleveland. It was off by almost a half inch over 8 feet, and I didn't catch it until the third row of tile was set. Had to pull everything and redo it, plus buy extra thinset. Anyone else get burned by budget tools on a tight deadline? What do you use that actually stays calibrated?

Grabbed a $15 one once and it pointed at the ceiling, so I feel your pain.

Man, that's brutal. Did you at least check the bubble level on it before you stuck it up, or did you just trust it? I've had cheap ones that were so far off I had to remount everything twice. What brand was it, so I know to steer clear?
