Update: thought the moisture meter at the supply house in Reno was a gimmick, saved me $800 on a subfloor
I picked up a cheap pin type moisture meter about 6 months ago because the guy at the counter in Reno kept pushing them and I figured it was just a sales pitch. Used it on a remodel job off Wells Ave where the homeowner swore the floor felt dry and there was no staining anywhere I could see. Stuck the pins in three spots near the sliding door and got readings over 24 percent while the rest of the room sat around 11. Pulled the plywood and sure enough the paper backing was black and soft right along that threshold where rain had been sneaking in for who knows how long. I would have laid new underlayment and hardwood right over it and been back there in a year fixing a cupped floor on my own dime, so that little $130 tool basically paid for itself on one job. The homeowner was not happy about the extra scope but at least it was caught before the finished floor went down. Now I check every room before I bid any floor work, takes 10 minutes tops. Anyone here have a moisture meter that reads through tile or do you still have to pull a piece to get a real number?
